劝业场是天津商业的标志性代表,座落在和平路和滨江道的交界处,始建于一九二八年,“劝业场”当时被人誉为:城中之城,市中之市,可以说天津形成现代格局的繁华是从“劝业场”开始的。

“天津劝业场”是由法国工程师——慕乐设计的,建筑面积2.1万平方米,立体五层,转角局部七层。

“劝业场”于一九二八年十二月十二日正式开业。当时进驻卖货的店铺多达300多家。开业之日火爆场面,上至中外官员,下至平民百姓,人人前往。据老一辈天津人讲除了抗战胜利和天津解放,天津市热闹的时候莫过于“劝业场”开业了!

1931年至1939年是劝业场的鼎盛时期,但这种繁荣只维持了不到十年,日本侵略者发动侵华战争,华北大部分地区沦陷,天津沦陷后,由于战乱不堪,物价飞涨,经济萧条,人民的购买力急剧下降,场内的不少店铺由于赚少赔多,纷纷撤出,劝业场开始衰落,此时的“劝业场”已经处于半停业的状态。

这种局面,直到解放后才得到了改变,随着公私合营,政府出资对劝业场加以改造,和比邻的天津商场合为一体,使得“劝业场”又重新焕发了勃勃生机。

1991年,历经风风雨雨的劝业场再度扩建,总面积达五万平方米,营业面积达3.43万平方米,成为天津市集购物、娱乐、消闲、服务为一体的多功能的新型商厦,并以其独有的特色和业以诚信的服务成为天津一张闪光的城市名片。
