学校创办于1956年，原名“北京体育学校”，1960年改建为“北京体育师范学院”，2000年更为现名“首都体育学院”。目前，学校在办学规模、办学层次、专业设置、师资队伍、教学质量、科研成果、场馆设施等综合办学。

学校现分为本部校区、北校区和凤凰岭校区。学校本部园区内建有教学科研综合楼、实验综合楼、教学实验楼、图书馆、大学生体育馆、田径综合馆、游泳综合馆、训练综合馆、篮球馆、排球馆、网球馆、武术馆、体操馆、塑胶田径场。学校北校区设有大型足球训练场。凤凰岭校区拥有平方米的各种室内体育馆和塑胶田径场，各项体育设施齐全。

学校目前已经初步形成了多层次、多规格、多形式的办学格局，设置了体育教育训练学院、运动科学与健康学院、武术与表演学院、管理与传播学院、休闲与社会体育学院等五个二级学院。目前学校共有体育教育、运动训练、运动人体科学、运动康复、社会体育指导与管理、休闲体育、武术与民族传统体育、舞蹈表演、新闻学、公共事业管理、体育经济与管理等十一个本科专业，涵盖了国家教育部颁发的体育类专业设置中的所有本科专业；设置了体育人文社会学、运动人体科学、运动教育训练学、民族传统体育学、应用心理学五个硕士专业三十个研究方向；自2003年起，学校与福建师范大学联合培养博士，2012年学校通过国家特殊需求博士人才培养项目审核，开始独立招收博士学位研究生。除了培养博士生、硕士生、本科生、中专生外， 还招收国内外访问学者、研究生学位课程班及外国留学生。
