公司前身分别为福建省永安水泥厂、福建水泥厂。福建省永安水泥厂为当年国家重点建设项目，创建于1958年7月，1986年5月1日，经福建省政府批准，更名为“福建水泥厂”。1993年11月改制设立股份制公司，更名为“福建水泥股份有限公司”。

1994年1月3日，公司以质优企业获准股票在上海证券交易所挂牌上市。1998年12月28日，兼并了当时的福建省第二大水泥企业——福建省顺昌水泥厂。2000年，公司总部正式从永安迁至福州城市中心——建福大厦。自此，企业走出永安，走向全省，并致力于更快更强发展，公司4#、6#、7#、8#、9#窑相继建成投产。公司目前总资产34亿元，现有员工2035余人。
