西安音乐学院是一所培养音乐艺术专门人才的全日制普通高等学校，是全国9所独立设置的音乐专业院校之一，也是西北地区唯一一所独立建制的高等音乐学府。

学院坐落在世界历史文化名城西安，隶属陕西省教育厅管辖。学院周边名胜古迹众多，包括中国佛教密宗的发源地——大兴善寺，及闻名全国的大雁塔、小雁塔、陕西历史博物馆、书院门和碑林博物馆等；相邻学府林立，如长安大学、西安建筑科技大学、西安外国语大学、西北政法大学、西安美术学院、西安财经学院等高等院校。

学院创建于1949年，前身为贺龙元帅担任校长的“西北军政大学艺术学院”。1956年改建为“西安音乐专科学校”，1960年升格为“西安音乐学院”，1980恢复“西安音乐学院”建制。

学院现有艺术学理论和音乐与舞蹈学两个一级学科硕士学位授权点、10个二级学科硕士学位授权点，有7个本科专业、10多个专业方向近40个乐种。设作曲、音乐学、声乐、民乐、管弦、钢琴、音乐教育、舞蹈、电子音乐工程9个系和视唱练耳教研室、基础部等教学单位，有西北民族音乐研究中心、交响乐团、民乐团、合唱团、西安鼓乐团等科研机构和艺术实践团体。现有专任教师380人，其中，教授36人、副教授84人，教师队伍中具有博士、硕士以上学历的比例达50%，享受国务院特殊津贴专家7人，省级突出贡献专家4人，省级教学名师5人。有国家级精品课程1门、省级精品课程3门，省级重点学科3个，省级教学团队3个，省级特色专业3个，省级人才培养模式创新实验区1个，省级研究基地3个。有在校研究生300多名、本科生3500多名、附中学生400名。学院业余音乐培训中心注册学生4000名。每年为社会业余音乐考级2万人。

学院现有在研国家级、省部级科研项目30多项，曾获国家科技进步二等奖、省级科技进步一等奖。合唱团夺得第十四届CCTV青年歌手电视大奖赛合唱银奖。与欧洲、美洲、亚洲十多所相关院校建立有合作办学关系，承担培养外国留学生工作。与国内外数十所专业院校建立了联合办学机制。

学报《交响》创刊于1982年，是面对国内外公开发行的综合性音乐学术季刊，现为中国学术期刊综合评价数据库来源期刊，《中国核心期刊(遴选)数据库》收录期刊。

学院先后被陕西省评为“城市先进基层党组织”、“民主管理先进单位”、“重点学科建设先进单位”、“依法治校示范校”、“省级文明校园”，在2006年教育部本科教学工作水平评估中获优秀。
