湖北美术学院是我国华中地区唯一一所多学科门类与多学历层次的高等美术学府。学校前身是创办于1920年的武昌美术学校，后定名为"私立武昌艺术专科学校"（简称武昌艺专）。作为我国开办最早的艺术专科院校之一和中国近、现代高等美术教育的发源地之一，迄今已有90余年的办学历史。学校秉承"兼收并蓄"的学术精神和"兼容互动"的教学理念，培养了一代又一代"崇德、笃学、敏行、致美"服务社会的优秀人才，为中国美术事业的发展、为美育作为新兴教育事业在全国的兴起做出了独特的贡献。

湖北美术学院拥有昙华林和藏龙岛两个校区，占地面积共计730余亩。现有在职教职工500余人，各学历层次在校生7000余人。

学校共设有动画、中国画、油画、壁画、版画、雕塑、视觉传达设计、工业设计、环境艺术设计、服装设计、美术学和水彩画等12个院系及视觉艺术基础部、研究生部、继续教育学院、公共课部和附属中专部。有美术学、设计学、艺术学理论3个一级学科和中国少数民族艺术（在建）1个二级学科，以及绘画、动画、雕塑、艺术设计、工业设计、美术学、艺术设计学、艺术教育、摄影、书法学10个本科专业，25个专业方向，且均具有学士学位、硕士学位授予权。2010年，学校与其他高校签署联合培养博士生协议，形成了我国中部地区高层次美术人才培养的新格局。

作为全国首批32所艺术硕士专业学位（MFA）教育试点单位之一，目前学校有享受国家政府特殊津贴人员10人，湖北省政府特殊津贴9人；设有湖北省现代公共视觉艺术设计研究中心和楚美术及中国南方先秦美术形态研究中心两个省级研究中心，下设8个研究所；学校本科教学共获批6项教育部"质量工程"国家级建设成果和立项项目；另有湖北省高等学校本科品牌专业和建设点5个，省级精品课程8门，省高等学校实验教学示范中心3个，省高等学校大学生创新活动基地1个、省研究生创新基地1个和省高等学校拔尖创新人才培育试验项目1个。

学校积极参与国内外学术交流。聘请著名中外艺术家担任学校客座教授和特约讲师，每年选派教师出国作学术访问和研修，并与国外部分艺术院校建立了长期的学术合作。

Wuchang art school was founded in 1920 and later named as "private Wuchang Art College" (Wuchang Art College for short). As one of the earliest art colleges and one of the birthplaces of modern higher art education in China, it has a history of more than 90 years. Hubei Academy of fine arts has two campuses, Tanhualin and Tibetan Dragon Island, covering an area of more than 730 mu.
