传说每年朝廷派来的官吏身穿大红袍，解袍挂在贡茶的树上，因此被称为大红袍。流传更广的是每当采茶之时，要焚香祭天，然后让猴子穿上红色的坎肩，爬到绝壁的茶树之上采摘茶叶。所以广东话把这种猴采茶称为"马骝茶"（广东人管猴子叫马骝）。正由于数量稀少，采摘困难，这种茶在市场上是价格昂贵的珍品。
