7-Eleven便利店诞生于美国,前身是成立于1927年的“南大陆制冰公司”。当时由于电冰箱并未普及,冷藏用的冰块成为生活中不可缺少的必需品。在南大陆制冰公司销售冰块的约翰·杰夫森·戈林,非常关心顾客服务的改善,他做出了夏季店铺天天开,每天营业16个小时的决定,这项服务深受当地居民的欢迎。不仅如此,戈林通过仔细调查当地居民的购买意愿和需求,发现当地居民不仅希望他能销售冰块,而且还希望他能适时地销售其他生活用品。比如:牛奶、鸡 蛋、面包等等。为此,戈林提议南大陆公司为自己负责的店铺提供更多的便利商品,并得到了公司的首肯。

就这样南大陆制冰公司不仅销售冰块,开始销售牛奶鸡蛋等商品,开创了新的经营领域和利益增长点。最初店铺被称为“图腾店”,放在店铺旁边的图腾柱成为便利店的标志。由于店铺的营业时间是从早上7点开始到晚上11点结束,1946年南大陆公司正式将图腾店改名为7-Eleven,从而真正的揭开了便利店时代的序幕。目前7-Eleven店铺遍及全世界18个国家地区。

后来7-Eleven由日本零售业经营者伊藤洋华堂于1974年引入日本,从1975年开始变更为24小时全天候营业。发展至今,店铺遍布美国、日本、中国、新加坡、马来西亚、菲律宾等国家和地区。
