迈乐 (MERRELL) 公司创始人Randy Merrell，原来是一个专门为 MERRELL牛仔定做靴子的鞋匠。1981年春天他在Utah州突然有了新的想法：制造Hiking Boot远足靴。其包含下列特征：有暖和的鞋跟部，符合脚型的鞋背和宽大的脚趾部分。这种手工制作的靴子价值500美元，而且需要等待6个月之长。之后《Backpacker Magazine》(《背包族杂志》)把Randy的靴子称为北美舒适、功能性强的靴子。不久后机会来了：Vermont州滑雪小组成员Clark Matis(同时还是奥林匹亚越野滑雪运动员)和John Schweizer酝酿了一个计划――批量生产Merrell远足靴。
