《新华日报》有着悠久而光荣的历史传统。1938年1月11日，《新华日报》正式在武汉创刊。1938年10月25日，《新华日报》在武汉出版终版一期。同日，同一期号、不同内容的《新华日报》在重庆出版。重庆《新华日报》一直出版至 1947年2月28日被国民党勒令停刊。至此，《新华日报》在国民党统治区共出版9年1个月又18天，在国民党政治、经济、文化中心占领了舆论制高点，被人民群众誉为“茫茫黑夜中的一座灯塔”，成为党推进抗日民族统一战线的有力工具和党沟通外部世界的一个重要窗口。

目前，《新华日报》国内外总发行量40万份。报纸分为A、B两叠，全部彩色印刷。A版主要为重要新闻、江苏新闻、焦点新闻和国内新闻等，B版主要为国际新闻和各类副刊专版，包括思想、人文、讲坛、文化体育、网眼、时尚、新潮及影像等一批特色专版和副刊。
