北京微梦创科网络技术有限公司为新浪微博的独立注册公司,于2010年10月11日在北京海淀区注册。

2014年3月27日晚间,新浪微博左上角的LOGO悄然更换,原有的“新浪”二字消失不见,却而代之的是更大字号的“微博”字样。截止目前,“新浪微博”称谓已经使用4年多时间。

2014年3月15日,新浪微博正式向美国证券交易委员会提交了上市申请文件,计划融资5亿美元,迈出了上市的重要一步。招股书显示,新浪微博的机构股东中,新浪集团持1.4亿股,占比77.6%;阿里巴巴持3489万股,占比19.3%。招股书中,新浪微博名称为“Weibo Corporation”,LOGO上的文字也仅有“weibo”字样。

有分析指出,新浪微博更名为微博,主要就是要淡化“新浪”色彩,而凸显其作为一家社交平台公司的独立性,这也有助于得到投资人的认可。

虽然微博不仅包括新浪微博,还有腾讯、搜狐、网易、人民、和讯等,但此次“新浪微博”改名“微博”,似乎在论证整个微博市场现在已经是新浪的天下。

微博市场几无悬念,包括腾讯、搜狐、网易等玩家几乎全线出局。腾讯微博业务重心大挪移,腾讯微博业务人员部分调转至微视。早前与新浪微博抗衡的腾讯微博也于3月21日在新浪上开通了微博。

搜狐的微博业务则是更加惨淡,张朝阳已经开始坚定做视频业务,不再提起微博,搜狐微博负责人方刚也转而负责新闻客户端。网易微博几乎消失,网易已将重点挪至易信。

新浪微博诞生于2009年,自其诞生至2010年,新浪先后申请了“微博”、“围脖”以及“weibo”的商标;2011年,新浪继续在美国递交了“微博”、“weibo”的商标申请。

新浪微博的域名也是经历了两次变动,问世之初,其域名为新浪网的二级域名:t.sina.com,2011年域名变更为weibo.com,为购买该域名,据称新浪耗资数百万。

新浪微博是一款为大众提供娱乐休闲生活服务的信息分享和交流平台。新浪微博于2009年8月14日开始内测。9月25日,新浪微博正式添加了@功能以及私信功能,此外还提供“评论”和“转发”功能,供用户交流。
