武汉音乐学院是国内中部地区较早独立设置的高等音乐学府。学校座落在历史悠久、人文荟萃的武昌古城，解放路校区位于湖北省武汉市武昌区解放路255号，毗邻的滨江校区位于武昌区张之洞路1号。

1953年，由中南文艺学院、华南人民文学艺术学院和广西省立艺术专科学校之音乐部分组建而成的中南音乐专科学校，是武汉音乐学院的建校起点。由此前溯，上述三校之音乐部分的各自前身，中南文艺学院的前身中原大学文艺学院及其在1949年接管的武昌艺术专科学校和在1950年并入的湖南大学文艺学院；组成华南人民文学艺术学院的广东省立艺术专科学校、广州市立艺术专科学校和香港中华音乐院；广西省立艺术专科学校的前身广西省 立艺术师资培训班等，她们共同构成了武汉音乐学院丰富多样、积淀深厚的音乐教育历史传承。1958年，中南音乐专科学校与武汉艺术师范学院合并，组建湖北艺术学院（1972-1978年用“湖北艺术专科学校”名）。1985年改建定名为武汉音乐学院。

学校是全国较早获得硕士学位授予权的音乐院校之一，现有艺术学和法学（马克思主义理论•思想政治教育）两个硕士学位授予点，以全日制本科和研究生学历教育为主，适当开展适应社会需要的其它类型教育。现有作曲系、音乐学系、中乐系、钢琴系、管弦系、声乐系、舞蹈系、音乐教育学院、演艺学院、研究生部、思想政治课部、公共基础课部、继续教育学院（含成人本科教育）、附属中学、附属小学等教学单位。有从音乐附小、音乐附中、大学本科、硕士研究生和博士研究生的教育层级。
