Arm is headquartered in Cambridge, the United Kingdom, with more than 2000 employees, and has many offices around the world, including design centers in Taiwan, France, India, Sweden and the United States. Arm's business model focuses on the design and licensing of IP, rather than the production and sale of actual semiconductor chips. The company grants IP licenses to partners, including semiconductor and systems companies. These partners can use arm's IP design to create and produce on-chip system design, but they need to pay arm the license fee of the original IP and pay royalties for each chip or chip produced. In addition to processor IP, the company offers a range of tools, physical and system IP to optimize system on chip design. Because of the diversity of arm's IP and the huge chip and software system supporting arm based solutions, the world's original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are widely using ARM technology, and the application fields involve mobile phones, digital set-top boxes, automobile braking systems and network routers. On July 18, 2016, Softbank of Japan agreed to purchase arm, a British chip design company, for £ 23.4 billion (US $31 billion). Softbank believes that with this acquisition, arm will make Softbank become the leader of the next huge potential technology market (i.e. Internet of things).
