公司拥有的铁路干线衔接了我国北方地区重要的煤炭供应和中转枢纽，处于“承东启西”的战略位置。主要担负着山西省的客货运输和冀、京、津、蒙、陕等省市区的部分货运任务，在全国铁路货物运输市场中保持地位。2016年，公司完成旅客发送量5578万人，货物发送量44737万吨，货物运输量60550万吨。大秦线完成货物运输量35125万吨。

公司拥有成熟、先进、可靠的铁路煤炭重载运输技术体系。所辖大秦线是具有世界先进水平、年运量大的现代化专业煤炭运输线路，采用Locotrol、双线电气化、GSM-R等重载技术，配置了性能先进的机车车辆等设备。公司依托北同蒲、宁岢线等万吨、2万吨装车点和秦皇岛、曹妃甸等煤炭接卸港口，组织大规模自动化装卸和重载直达运输，形成了完整、先进、高效的煤炭重载集疏运系统。
