湖南涉外经济学院是经国家教育部批准成立的民办普通本科院校。学校由湖南猎鹰实业有限公司投资创建于1997年，原名“湘南文理专修学院”；1998年迁址长沙市岳麓区麓谷园，更名为“湖南涉外经济学院（筹）”; 2000年经湖南省人民政府批准设置为高职专科学校；2005年经国家教育部和湖南省人民政府批准，升格为本科院校。2009年，学校通过学士学位授予权评估，获得学士学位授予权。2015年通过教育部本科教学工作合格评估。

湖南涉外经济学院学校有全日制在校学生27233人，其中统招本科学生23969人，统招高职专科学生3264人。建校20年来，学校累计为国家和社会培养各类专门人才77669人。

学校拥有一支以博士教授为龙头、中青年教师为骨干的师资队伍。学校现有教职工1555人，其中自有教师1040 人（含专任教师859 人，教学兼管理人员171 人），外聘教师514 人。学校自有教师中有博士学位的85 人，硕士学位的778 人；有正高职称的73 人，副高职称的320 人；享受国务院特殊津贴专家5 人。
