阳江刀剪历史悠久,驰名中外。阳江制刀历史可溯至1400多年前。公元557年,民族英雄冼夫人屯兵两阳,在阳江地区制作兵器,清《冯代族谱》载:“......冯大将军生平所用八十二斤峨眉宣锦大刀纳于家中”。冯大将军即冼夫人的孙子冯盎,曾任宋康令,公元646年葬于阳江北山。这“峨眉宣锦大刀”即阳江俗称的“大杀刀”。其后,制刀工艺传至民间,生产各种民用刀。

清初,阳江县城形成了大规模的制刀坊,其生产地点即现在江城区打铁巷。这个时候的代表作是何传利铁匠制作的“文武刀”,当时国内著名酒楼都在何传利作坊制菜刀。城郊那洛村村民开始制造小刀。二十世纪30年代,县城昌记是生产和销售小刀的专业店,同一时期,梁季芙创制独具一格的“季芙小刀”同这种小刀锋利、耐用、美观,可刮胡须,此在全国小刀评比中获奖,并送世界博览会参展。从此,阳江小刀闻名海内外。

建国前,阳江从事小刀生产的有300多人。1955年,生产小刀的个体户组成4个生产社,1956年组建国营小刀厂,这是阳江县规模最大的小刀厂,也是国内行业中产值、产量、品种、创汇最多的企业之一,被列为国家机电产品出基地企业。1966,又先后成立了一批小刀集体企业,主要产品有小刀、怀剪、民用剪及餐具等。
