华东师范大学是由国家举办，教育部主管，教育部与上海市人民政府共建的综合性研究型大学。学校成立于1951年10月16日。

学校目前设有3个学部：地球科学学部、教育学部、经济与管理学部；27个全日制学院：人文社会科学学院、马克思主义学院、法学院、社会发展学院、外语学院、对外汉语学院、心理与认知科学学院、体育与健康学院、经济学院、工商管理学院、公共管理学院、统计学院、传播学院、艺术学院、设计学院、理工学院、物理与材料科学学院、化学与分子工程学院、地理科学学院、城市与区域科学学院、生态与环境科学学院、生命科学学院、信息科学技术学院、计算机科学与软件工程学院、国际汉语教师学院、教师教育学院、数据科学与工程学院；2个书院：孟宪承书院、经管书院；8个实体研究院（所、实验室）：思勉人文高等研究院、国际关系与地区发展研究院、河口海岸科学研究院、国际航运物流研究院、城市发展研究院、国家教育宏观政策研究院、艺术研究所；1个管理型学院：开放教育学院/上海教师发展学院。另有设在学校的教育部中学校长培训中心。

截至2017年3月，在校全日制本专科生14，517人，其中本科生14，413人，专科生104人；在校研究生16，222人，其中博士研究生3,236人，硕士研究生12，986人（含免费师范生教育硕士3,650人）；留学生4，535人。学校有教职工4，034人，其中专任教师2，248人。教授及其他高级职称教师1，807人。学校主要校区为闵行校区（地址为上海市东川路500号）和中山北路校区（地址为上海市中山北路3663号），校园占地总面积约207公顷。

学校注重国际合作交流，先后与法国高师集团、美国纽约大学、弗吉尼亚大学、康奈尔大学、澳大利亚昆士兰大学、巴西圣保罗大学、日本东京大学等大学建立了战略合作伙伴关系，与世界200余所高校、科研机构签订了学术合作与交流协议。与法国高师集团成立中法联合研究院、联合研究生院；与美国纽约大学联合创办的上海纽约大学，是具有独立法人资格的中美合作创办的大学；与法国里昂商学院合作共建亚欧商学院；与以色列海法大学合作共建转化科学与技术联合研究院。学校设有国家汉办所属的国际汉语教师研修基地，作为中方合作院校建设8所孔子学院。

There is also a training center for Headmasters in secondary schools of the Ministry of education. As of March 2017, there were 14517 full-time college students, including 14413 undergraduate students and 104 junior college students; 16222 graduate students, including 3236 doctoral students, 12986 master's students (including 3650 free normal students) and 4535 international students. The school has 4034 faculty members, including 2248 full-time teachers. 1807 professors and other senior teachers. The main campuses of the school are Minhang Campus (address: No. 500, Dongchuan Road, Shanghai) and North Zhongshan Road Campus (address: No. 3663, North Zhongshan Road, Shanghai), covering a total area of 207 hectares. Focusing on international cooperation and exchange, the university has established strategic partnership with French normal university group, New York University, University of Virginia, Cornell University, University of Queensland in Australia, Sao Paulo University in Brazil, University of Tokyo in Japan, and signed academic cooperation and exchange agreements with more than 200 universities and scientific research institutions in the world. China France Joint Research Institute and joint graduate school are established with French normal university group; Shanghai New York University, jointly established with New York University of the United States, is a University jointly established by China and the United States with independent legal personality; Asia Europe Business School is jointly established with Lyon Business School of France; joint Research Institute of transformation science and technology is jointly established with Haifa University of Israel. The school has an international Chinese teacher training base affiliated to Hanban, which serves as a Chinese Cooperative college to build 8 Confucius Institutes.
