1997年，云南云天化股份有限公司由云天化集团有限责任公司发起组建并在上海证券交易所挂牌上市（证券代码600096）。利用上市后有利的发展机遇，云天化股份由原来单一的氮肥产业拓展到有机化工等领域，初步实现了产业多元化。
