钟牌414牌毛巾是由创始人李康年于1937年创立的。1937年“八一三”事变,上海抗日战争爆发,中国国货因受战火影响,中高挡国产毛巾脱销,国货公司老板等人商定创办中国萃众毛巾制造有限公司,公司成立后,李康年登报征求商标图案,最后在几百件的设计稿件中一件以古代“钟”为图案的商标作品脱颖而出。商标《钟》的含意有三:其一是钟,金属铸,扣之有声,其二是产品问世之年正处于抗日战争时期“国人使用国货”,警钟长鸣,提倡爱国;其三,产品质量拔萃超众,故以萃众为厂名,并以萃众两字组成钟形图案为商标。当年由于消费者对钟牌认知度不够,很少有人问津,销售商也不愿意进货,于是,李康年就提出给销售商送毛巾,请销售商试一试,后来货号就选用“试一试”的谐音“414”。

钟牌414牌作为复合商标早在民国28年就注册,1947年再次以“钟牌414牌”向南京商标局注册,并获得了商标专用权,1948年在上海国货展览会上获特等奖。1954年公私合营后,又向国家商标局申请注册了“钟牌”和“414牌”的复合商标即“钟牌414牌”商标。
