杭州金银首饰发展历史源远流长,五代吴越国时,杭州金银饰品制作已具较高水平,据史料记载,吴越归宋时,贡奉之物中金银器皿颇多,诸如香炉、盆、罐、各种酒具等,从西湖雷锋塔地宫出土的鎏金纯银大佛像,便是佐证。

至南宋迁都杭州后,当时有大批为王室服务的能工巧匠纷纷南下,使杭州历来享有盛誉的金银珠宝首饰技艺更集南北之大成,产品古朴、高雅,风格特突。

据《梦梁录》卷十三《铺席》载,南宋时全国冶金产区达数百处,原金之多,足以表明金银制作的兴旺,自佛教传入中国后,用于寺庙,塑制佛像贴金,商贾的金字招牌抹金,金泊薄如蝉翼,手工拍打的技艺,实可称奇。

元代杭州经济回落,金银饰业不及南宋繁荣。至明朝社会相对稳定,经济有了发展,据《万历杭州府志》卷载,当时民间经商极多,金银作坊也有了恢复发展,开始树品牌,手工技艺也趋提高成熟,但规模都不大,前店后作坊,称作“夫妻店”。

清末民初,杭州经济日益繁荣,各地商贾云集杭城,金银作坊有了发展,1865年上海方某来杭在珠宝巷开设信源银楼,后乾源、义源也相继开设,地处信源两侧。三家银楼规模大,此时珠宝巷已成为杭州金银饰品交易中心。

1949年杭州解放,政府取缔投机活动,于同年6月12日公布金银管理条例,银楼就此全部停业。72年为积极争创外汇,重新组建杭州金银饰品厂,“信源”也得以光复品牌。当时企业专门从事首饰的外贸出口,制作师傅均招自民间,除本地外,有上海、宁波、嘉兴、绍兴等地,早年从事制作的老翁,产品既有工艺特色金银大件,更有供出口创汇的首饰小件。从业人员达数百人,生产手段均采用传统手工制作。作品造型生动,雕刻精细。大件形态逼真,技法多样,目睹者无不称奇。作品除参加全国工艺美展外,还远涉重洋去喀麦隆展示。

In the Yuan Dynasty, Hangzhou's economy fell, and its gold and silver decoration industry was less prosperous than that of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the society was relatively stable and the economy developed. According to the records of Hangzhou government in Wanli, at that time, there were a lot of private businesses, gold and silver workshops recovered and developed, started to build brands, and the craftsmanship gradually improved and matured, but the scale was not large. The workshops in front of the shops and behind the shops were called "husband and wife shops". At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Hangzhou's economy became more and more prosperous. In 1865, a person from Shanghai came to Hangzhou to open Xinyuan Silver Tower in jewelry lane, and then Qianyuan and Yiyuan opened one after another, located on both sides of Xinyuan. After the liberation of Hangzhou in 1949, the government banned speculation.
