自建校以来，上海外国语大学始终保持着学科优势和高水平的教学质量，是拥有两个一级学科（外国语言文学、政治学）博士学位授权点和博士后科研流动站的高校。目前，学校已充分形成以语言文学类学科见长，文学、教育学、经济学、管理学、法学等五大门类协调发展的学科格局，多元并举，特色鲜明，共设有19个教学院（系）和3个直属教学部。
