上海杉达学院是在上海浦东开发开放的背景下，于1992年6月由上海交通大学、北京大学、清华大学部分教授发起创办的全日制民办大学。1992年8月，经上海市高等教育局批准筹办，校名为“杉达大学”，并于当年秋季面向全国招生；1994年2月，经国家教育委员会批准正式建校；2002年3月，经国家教育部批准设置为全日制普通本科院校，校名为“上海杉达学院”；2005年8月，经上海市学位委员会批准，增列为学士学位授予单位。

学校建有上海浦东、浙江嘉善两个校区，总占地面积808亩，校舍总建筑面积30万平方米，教学仪器设备总值2亿元，图书馆纸质图书128万册。学校设有胜祥商学院、管理学院、信息科学与技术学院、外语学院、艺术与设计学院、国际医学技术学院、上海现代服务外包学院（与上海现代服务发展研究基金会合作共建）、公共教育学院、马克思主义学院、嘉善光彪学院（校基础部）、沪东工学院（与沪东中华造船集团有限公司合作共建）、时尚学院（与上海纺织控股集团公司合作共建）、传媒学院（与中国互联网新闻中心合作共建）、旅游与酒店管理学院、国际教育学院、创新与创业学院（与上海纺织时尚产业发展有限公司合作共建）、继续教育学院等二级学院，设有经济学、法学、文学、工学、管理学、艺术学、医学、教育学等8个学科门类，37个本科专业、6个专科专业。现有专任教师700余人，其中具有副高级以上职称的教师占44.5%，硕士研究生以上学历的教师占84.5%。全日制在校生1.4万余人，其中本科生1.3万余人；建校以来，培养了4万余名各级各类人才。

学校围绕行业资格框架，建立与大中型企业合作成立二级学院、与企业合作开展教学培训与毕业设计、与企业共建实践教学基地等模式，形成“主体多元、模式灵活、相互作用、社会满意”的产学合作教育格局。政府扶持专项资金和自有资金配套投入，完成80余个学科专业内涵建设项目，拥有商务流程、信息技术、服务外包、网络新媒体、护理康复、旅游管理等实验实训教学中心，以及各类专业教学实验室150余个。

学校借鉴国际办学模式，与国外合作伙伴共同制定合作办学项目人才培养方案，实行学分互认；引进外籍教师和具有国际背景优秀教师，组建中外教学团队，利用国际优质课程资源，改革教学内容、教学方法和考核方式。学校先后与16个国家和地区的近60所大学建立了校际合作交流协议与合作项目，各二级学院均有合作交流项目。
