南翔小笼闻名遐迩，由嘉定南翔镇黄明贤于同治年间创制设店专卖，店名：日华轩，该店后毁于日军轰炸，黄明贤妻弟南翔镇人员吴翔升看到上海工商业蓬勃发展，老城隍庙集市空前繁荣，遂于光绪二十六年（公元1900）携制作师傅赵秋荣，承袭祖传工艺，选九曲桥畔原船舫厅旧址，创设了专营南翔小笼的“长兴楼”，后店名改为“南翔馒头店”，专营南翔小笼，以皮薄、馅丰、上口一包卤汁而名扬四方。

南翔小笼因制作精、质量佳、桂冠频摘。1989年荣获原中华人民共和国商业部优质产品“金鼎奖”；1995年被上海市人民政府财贸办公室认定为“上海名特小吃”；1998年又被中国烹饪协会认为为“中华名小吃”；2000年再次被国家国内贸易局评定“中国名点”；2001年，中国烹饪协会评定为“中华餐饮名店”；2002年，中国烹饪协会评定为“中国名点”；2003年，上海物价局、上海市委、上海市技监局、上海市消费者协会评定为“价格信得过单位”；2003年第五届全国烹饪技术比赛中荣获“南翔小笼”金奖，2004年8月，参加世界烹饪大赛又获二枚金牌，2005年度，又获得上海市著名商标、中国商业名牌企业、全国商业顾客满意企业，2006年度获得上海名牌企业、上海老字号、上海非物质文化遗产，因而风靡申城，饮誉海内外。

南翔馒头店自1990年来经过三次扩建，老店旧貌换新颜。步入该店犹如踏上古朴典雅的游船，铺面为加工生产和外卖南翔小笼，二楼设四个餐厅：“船舫厅”、“长兴楼”、“鼎兴楼”、“瑞鑫楼”风格各异、环境幽雅、座位舒适，凭窗眺望，园林风光和市井风貌映现眼前，是都市观光旅游和美食享受的好去处。
