天津体育学院成立于1958年8月。建校初期，学校汇集了一批优秀教练员和运动员，具有较高的竞技运动水平。

2013年3月，学校位于静海区团泊新城西区健康产业园的新校区建设奠基开工。新校区占地面积1115.7亩，规划建设各类校舍建筑总面积46.31万平方米，预计总投资47亿元，2016年实现整体搬迁，将从根本上扩展学校的办学空间、改善办学条件、增强办学实力。
