澳门大学于1981年成立,前身为私立东亚大学。建校以来,澳门大学已培养学生超过两万六千人,服务于社会各界。

澳门大学现有学生9,400多名,设有人文学院、工商管理学院、教育学院、健康科学学院、法学院、社会科学学院、科技学院、中华医药研究院及荣誉学院,开办学士、硕士、博士等约130多个学位课程,授课语言以英语为主,部分课程以中、葡或日语授课。

澳门大学近年改革本科课程,以体验式的、多角度手段培养人才,包括:(一)推行融合专业、通识、研习和社群教育的「四位一体」教育模式,满足学生在成长过程中的不同需要;(二)建立亚洲具规模和完整的住宿式书院系统,与学院制度相辅相成,以体验式教学方法,培养学生认识自我;(三)设立澳门荣誉学院;(四)推行新的核心通识课程,提升学生的跨学科知识视野,使学生毕业时成为具有竞争力的型人才;(五)实行本科生研究实习计划,为学生在本科四年创造参与研究的机会;(六)加强学生就业辅导,为学生职业生涯规划预先作好充分准备。目前已建立一支拥有560多人的师资队伍。

澳门大学一直大力发展科研,近年更明确了向研究型大学转型的思路,取得了良好的学术成果。为配合澳门高等教育的发展及其对高质素人才的需要,澳门大学于2014年8月迁入位于广东省横琴岛、一个沿用澳门法律管辖的新校园,面积比旧校园约大20倍,占地约1.09平方公里,可容纳至少15,000名学生。

现时,澳门大学借鉴了牛津、剑桥、耶鲁等院校的成功经验,转型为住宿式书院式大学。新校园现设八所住宿式书院,书院与学院制度相辅相成,来自不同学科、不同年级的本科生可一起学习、竞赛、娱乐和生活,并在同侪的激励与合作之下学习自律管理、自主行动、自我成长,达致全天候、多方位培养人才的目的。
