挑花是一种中国古老的传统刺绣工艺，它分布广泛，其中又以湖北黄梅挑花发源早，具代表性和影响力，在中国挑花工艺发展史中占主导地位。因此，黄梅挑花也是各挑花的代表和统称。

黄梅挑花又名十字挑花、十字挑花绣，起源于唐宋，兴于明清。十四世纪经土耳其传到欧洲，因针法简单、表现力强，风靡欧洲各国宫廷。
