始于1913年，原华中科技大学武昌分校，中国较早的独立学院，中国教育创新改革倡导者，国内本科专业办学实力强、办学水平高、办学特色鲜明的民办大学

武昌首义学院是2000年8月经国家教育部批准设立，由华中科技大学和武汉军威文化传播集团合作兴办。学校初名华中科技大学军威学院，翌年3月更名华中科技大学武昌分校，2015年5月复更为现名。

学校坐落于武昌南湖。现占地面积1000余亩，建筑总面积59万平米。现代教学与生活设施体系完善。校园林秀花香、环境幽雅。在校生规模1.3万余人。教职工近千人，其中专任教师709人。具有高级以上职称教师298人，具有硕士以上学位教师570人。

设有信息科学与工程、机电与自动化、城市建设、外国语、经济管理、新闻与法学、艺术设计等七个院，及基础科学部、思想政治理论课部等。41个本科专业分布于信息、机电、土木、经管、文法、艺术等六类学科中。建有数控、光信息、通信、网络、新闻传播和模拟法庭等68个基础及专业实验室。2008年9月，设中国大陆台资企业人才培养基地。图书馆中文纸本图书133万册，电子图书475万册。

It has 68 basic and professional laboratories, including numerical control, optical information, communication, network, news communication and simulation court. In September 2008, a talent training base for Taiwan funded enterprises in mainland China was established. There are 1.33 million Chinese paper books and 4.75 million electronic books in the library.
