江南大学是教育部直属、国家“211工程”重点建设高校。学校具有悠久的办学历史、厚重的文化积淀，源起1902年创建的三江师范学堂，历经国立中央大学、南京大学等发展时期；1958年南京工学院食品工业系整建制东迁无锡，建立无锡轻工业学院；1995年更名为无锡轻工大学；2001年无锡轻工大学、江南学院、无锡教育学院合并组建江南大学；2003年东华大学无锡校区并入江南大学。

学校坚持“选择性卓越”的学科建设理念，建立良好的学科生态环境。设有18个学院（部），包括：食品学院、生物工程学院、纺织服装学院、化学与材料工程学院、物联网工程学院、环境与土木工程学院、商学院、理学院、机械工程学院、设计学院、药学院、医学院、马克思主义学院、人文学院、外国语学院、法学院、数字媒体学院和体育部。涵盖理、工、农、医、文、法、经济、管理、教育、艺术等学科门类10个。建有博士后流动站6个，食品科学与工程、轻工技术与工程、纺织科学与工程、控制科学与工程、化学工程与技术、设计学等6个博士学位授权一级学科，26个硕士学位授权一级学科以及5个硕士专业学位授权类别。
