中国音乐学院成立于1964年，是根据周恩来总理的提议而建立的。她是我国唯一一所以中国民族音乐教育和研究为主要特色，培养从事民族音乐理论研究、创作、表演和教育，推动民族音乐文化继承和发展的高级专门人才的高等音乐学府。

学院名师荟萃，教学、科研力量雄厚。我院现有专任教师212人，其中教授40人，副教授64人；博士生导师28人，享受国务院政府特殊津贴专家49人，荣获国家级“教学名师奖”2人，北京市级教学名师2人，国家“有突出贡献的中青年专家”3人，北京市“有突出贡献的科学、技术、管理专家”2人；获文化部文华奖3人（次），中国音乐金钟奖14人（次）等等。

建院40多年来已先后培养了吴雁泽、德德玛、彭丽媛、宋祖英、阎维文、张也、刘斌、吕继红、谭晶、祖海等五千余名国际国内知名的音乐艺术家，为中国民族音乐的继承、发展和弘扬作出了重要贡献。学校共有全日制在校生1657人。

学院办学条件优越，所有教室全部实现多媒体化，拥有世界一流的计算机作曲教学设备，亚洲地区最先进的录音棚，两百多间供学生使用的琴房，并配有大批世界一流的钢琴和高品质的民族乐器，为保证教学质量和人才培养质量提供了坚实的基础。

学院坚持开放的办学方针，先后与日本、韩国、美国、法国、德国等数十个国家以及港澳台地区的多所艺术院校及音乐机构友好往来，并建立了长期合作关系。学校每年聘请数十名外国专家来校讲学，为促进中外音乐文化交流和民族音乐走向世界发挥了重要作用。
