中国音乐学院成立于1964年，是根据周恩来总理的提议而建立的。她是我国唯一一所以中国民族音乐教育和研究为主要特色，培养从事民族音乐理论研究、创作、表演和教育，推动民族音乐文化继承和发展的高级专门人才的高等音乐学府。

建院40多年来已先后培养了吴雁泽、德德玛、彭丽媛、宋祖英、阎维文、张也、刘斌、吕继红、谭晶、祖海等五千余名国际国内知名的音乐艺术家，为中国民族音乐的继承、发展和弘扬作出了重要贡献。学校共有全日制在校生1657人。

学院办学条件优越，所有教室全部实现多媒体化，拥有世界一流的计算机作曲教学设备，亚洲地区最先进的录音棚，两百多间供学生使用的琴房，并配有大批世界一流的钢琴和高品质的民族乐器，为保证教学质量和人才培养质量提供了坚实的基础。
