南日鲍产于福建省莆田市南日岛。福建省莆田市秀屿区南日镇现辖行政区域及海域（辖17个行政村，面积508平方公里）。这里水质清新、水温适中，独特的自然环境使出产的南日鲍鱼体肥壳艳，鲍肉细嫩，味道鲜美独特，富含蛋白质、氨基酸、脂肪等物质。南日鲍鱼以接近野生的绿色食品而饮誉天下深受国内外消费者欢迎，“南日鲍”由此得名并且声名日隆。南日岛地理位置独特，位于莆田市兴化湾和平海湾交汇处，东濒台湾海峡，距台湾新竹港72.89海里，是扩大对台、对外贸易的窗口。南日岛已成为两岸交流的桥头堡。

鲍鱼古称“腹鱼”，又有“镜面鱼、九孔螺、明目鱼”等别名。鲍鱼有较高的食用价值和药用价值，肉质细嫩，味道鲜美，营养十分丰富。鲍肉含蛋白质40%，肝醣33.7%，脂肪0.9%，并含多种维生素和微量元素。而且，鲍鱼属于低胆固醇的食品，不易造成人体胆固醇的上升，维生素E含量丰富，是预心血管疾病的健康食品。鲍壳还可作为中药“石决明”使用。

2007年国家质检总局发布公告批准对南日鲍鱼实施标志产品保护，保护范围为莆田市秀屿区南日镇现辖行政区域，全国各地质监部门自2007年9月6日起开始对其实施地理标志产品保护措施。

目前，南日海域已成为我国鲍鱼主产区之一，成为全国较大的浅海浮筏式网箱养鲍基地。2008-2010年南日鲍鱼年产量分别为5235吨、6011吨、6869吨，产值分别达120037万元、135890万元、156317万元。目前，南日鲍销售遍布北京、上海、山东、浙江、广东等国内300多个大中城市，还出口到日本、韩国、新加波、俄罗斯、美国等20多个国家和地区。南日岛与湄洲岛（妈祖的朝拜地）是姐妹岛，每年台湾来朝拜的游客数十万。由于地理位置的特殊性，两岸人民一直就在海面上进行民间的贸易往来，每年海上鲍鱼的贸易金额高达数千万人民币。随着两岸关系的改善，双方的技术和市场交流日益频繁，有力地推动了鲍鱼养殖产业的发展。已有数家台资企业落户南日岛，指导当地养殖户进行鲍鱼的养殖，带来专业的生产管理技术和市场营销理念，极大促进了南日鲍产业的健康发展。

In 2007, AQSIQ issued a notice to approve the implementation of the protection of the sign products for abalone in Nanri Town, Xiuyu District, Putian City. At present, Nanri sea area has become one of the main abalone producing areas in China, and has become a large shallow sea floating raft cage abalone breeding base in China.
