上海大学上海美术学院的前身是1959年成立的上海美术专科学校（本科），她传承了1912年刘海粟创办的“上海美专”的海派美术精神；1983年并入新组建的上海大学，定名为上海大学美术学院。2016年12月，正式挂牌为上海大学上海美术学院。

美院现有中国画、油画、版画、雕塑、美术学、视觉传达设计、环境设计、建筑学、城乡规划9个本科专业。中国画系、油画系、雕塑系、版画系、美术设计系、美术学系、建筑系、数码系8个教学系和公共艺术技术实验教学中心。“公共艺术技术实验教学中心”是上海地区较早的艺术类实验教学示范中心，设立陶瓷、玻璃、版画、数字艺术、综合材料、首饰、漆艺、织绣等工作室，承担美院的本科教学、研究生培养等工作。学院现有在编在岗专业教师151人，其中教授29人，副教授62人。

学院拥有三个一级学科博士学位授予点（美术学、设计学、艺术理论），一个博士后流动站（美术学），两个上海高校人文艺术创新工作室（美术创作中心、公共艺术创作中心），一个教育部特色专业、一个上海市学科（美术学），一个上海协同创新中心（上海公共艺术协同创新中心）。目前已形成了以本科教学为基础和主体、研究生教育为重心、辅以留学生培养、短期培训和交流等完备的人才培养体系和多层次的办学格局；现有学生近2000人，其中本科生1200余人，博士、硕士研究生580多人、留学生30余人。
