宁夏银行成立于1998年10月28日，是由宁夏回族自治区、银川市两级政府及企业入股组建的一家股份制商业银行。
2009年11月26日，宁夏银行小企业信贷中心成立，成为全国较早具备准法人性质的小企业专营机构。2009年12月8日，宁夏银行西安分行开业，较早在西北城市商业银行中跨省（区）设立分支机构。2011年4月28日，宁夏银行天津分行开业，跨区域经营战略进一步推进。
截至目前，全行拥有员工2610人，其中大学本科及以上学历人员占比91%，具有高中级技术职称人员占比21%，员工平均年龄34.9岁。目前，全行下辖81家分支机构，其中，一级分行2家（西安分行、天津分行），二级分行3家（吴忠分行、石嘴山分行、中卫分行），营业部1家，区内一、二级支行69家；发起设立1家隆德六盘山村镇银行。
宁夏银行坚持“服务中小企业、服务城乡居民”的市场定位，走特色化、差异化的业务发展道路，先后推出了“24小时银行”、“存取款免填单”、“96558”电话银行、“账户信息通”、如意白金卡等金融产品和服务品牌；国际业务于2003年12月8日开通，网上银行于2009年7月成功上线，服务功能逐步完善。
宁夏银行通过不断完善公司治理，强化内控建设，加大市场拓展，加强基础管理，提高资产质量，各项业务取得了长足发展。截至2016年末，全行资产总额1369亿元，各项存款余额851亿元，贷款余额600亿元，分别是成立时的184倍、196倍和190倍；资本充足率12.23%。
