公司创建于1956年，是国内较早从事轻工机械研究和生产的大型一类企业。1991年12月，“上海轻工机械股份有限公司”组建成立。公司股票于1992年3月在上海证券交易所挂牌上市，证券代码为600605。

2007年，公司更名为上海汇通能源股份有限公司，并收购内蒙古汇通能源投资有限公司，明确了风力发电为公司未来的主业。

2011年4月21日，公司开发的汇通能源卓资巴音锡勒风电场一期49.5MW项目正式并网发电，这标志着公司的产业结构调整实现了实质性突破，开始走上专业风力发电企业的发展之路。
