香港科技大学是因为1980年代经济结构转变而起，由于香港已经进入经济转接期，香港政府预计香港经济会转型为以高科技与商业为主，而工商业要求有更多大学生配合，所以当时香港政府就决定兴建第三间大学，以配合这个需要。1986年，香港政府选址新界清水湾半岛北部大埔仔的前科希马军营（Kohima Camp）建立香港科技大学。1991年10月，科大举行开幕典礼。2001年4月，科大庆祝十周年校庆。2011年4月，科大庆祝二十周年校庆。

截至2014年9月，香港科技大学校园占地超过60公顷（150英亩），有教员644人，各类学生13456人，其中本科生8981人，研究生4475人。

办学模式

1、本科生研究计划

本科生研究计划是科大一个特别计划旨在培养本科生对研究的兴趣。参与计划的本科生会在教授的指导下，进行研究活动。在这计划下，本科生须与教授订立研究范畴，并在计划完结时提交学术报告。计划一般为期三至四个月。

2、创业中心

科大创业中心是以培养未来的企业家和鼓励大学社区成员直接参与新技术的商业化创新创业中心。它帮助学生真正对创业感兴趣，成为主管可以在启动和追求创业中作为职业选择。

Started in 1986, higher education institutions funded by the government's university education funding Committee and capable of awarding degrees mainly focus on science and technology, business management, humanities and Social Sciences, especially the Hong Kong University of science and technology, or HKUST for short. The Hong Kong University of science and Technology (HKUST) started from the transformation of the economic structure in the 1980s. As Hong Kong has entered the transition period, the Hong Kong government expects that the economy of Hong Kong will be transformed into one dominated by high technology and commerce, and that industry and Commerce require more college students to cooperate. The undergraduate research program is a special program of the University of science and technology to cultivate the Undergraduates' interest in research. Under the guidance of the professor, the undergraduates participating in the program will carry out research activities. Under this program, undergraduate students are required to establish research areas with professors and submit academic reports at the end of the program. The plan generally lasts for three to four months. 2. The entrepreneurship center of University of science and technology is a commercial innovation and entrepreneurship center to cultivate future entrepreneurs and encourage university community members to directly participate in new technology.
