中国医学科学院（下称院）成立于1956年，是国内医学科学学术中心和综合性医学科学研究机构。北京协和医学院（下称校）由美国洛克菲勒基金会于1917年创办，是国内较早设有八年制临床医学专业和护理本科教育的重要医学院校。

医科院与协和医学院实行院校合一的管理体制，医科院为协和医学院提供雄厚的师资和技术力量，协和医学院为医科院培养高层次的人才，相互依托，优势互补，教研相长。院校设有18个研究所（以及5个分所）、7所临床医院（含与北京市共建的天坛医院）、6所学院、1个研究生院。院校拥有一大批在医药卫生领域内经验丰富、学术水平较高并做出贡献的专家、教授。

院校科研实力雄厚，医学科研包括基础医学、临床医学、预防医学、药物以及与医药学有关的生物、物理、化学等相关学科，覆盖了医学科学各领域。拥有5个重要实验室、10个部门开放实验室、2个国家工程技术研究中心、1个国家工程研究中心、1个国家工程实验室、21个其他省市实验室和工程技术中心、6个博士后科研流动站。“十一五”期间，承担各类科研项目共计6367项，累计获科研项目资助额达22.1亿，其中科研项目资助金额占61%；累计获各类科技奖励成果199项，其中国家科学技术奖24项；累计获准专利215项，新药证书7项；累计发表SCI论文3877篇，位居全国医学院校之首。

院校拥有6所直属医院（北京协和医院、阜外心血管病医院、肿瘤医院、整形外科医院、血液病医院和皮肤病医院）和一所共建医院（北京天坛医院），病床近5328张，集综合性医院和专科医院于一体，在心血管疾病、恶性肿瘤、血液病、疑难皮肤病、遗传性疾病、器官再造、自身免疫性疾病、内分泌疾病等重大疑难疾病的诊治方面达到国际前沿水平，形成了国内外闻名的医疗、教学和科研紧密结合的医疗服务体系。

院校图书馆是国内历史悠久、藏书颇为丰富的医学专业图书馆。2000年被指定为国家科技图书文献中心医学分中心，也是联合国世界卫生组织卫生与生物医学信息合作中心。藏书以生物医学书刊为主，总量超过50万册，其中尤以外文医学期刊较为丰富，许多重要期刊都是从创刊号成套入藏，目前外文医学期刊收订达5000余种。此外，还藏有千余部中医古籍。所拥有的中国医学文献分析和检索系统面向全国开放，丰富的馆藏资源为教学、科研和医疗工作提供了宝贵的资料和信息平台。

院校十分重视开展国际学术交流与科技合作，与数十个国家（或地区）的医学院校和科研机构建立了科研、教育、医疗领域的合作关系。自1985年以来，我校相继与美国哈佛大学医学院、美国加州大学旧金山分校医学院、美国密歇根大学医学院、澳大利亚西澳大学医学院及香港中文大学医学院签订了校际交流协议，彼此交换高年级学生到对方学校进行短期临床学习。经国家教育部批准，1993年起学校可自行接收政府计划外自费留学生，1997年起又获准招收中国台湾、香港和澳门地区学生来校学习。

在2002年教育部、卫生部签署共建协议的基础上，在国务院领导同志和教育部、卫生部的大力支持和推动下，2006年9月，学校与清华大学实行紧密合作办学，可同时使用“北京协和医学院--清华大学医学部”作为第二名称，学校仍为独立法人单位，并进入“211”和“985”工程建设行列。两校强强联合办学，共同探求中国高等医学教育改革的创新模式。
