平和琯溪蜜柚因“结实重大，几欲脱树“，在明、清时称之为平和抛；又因原产于琯溪河畔的西圃洲地（平和县小溪镇西林、联星村），果大如斗，甜如蜜，后人改称为琯溪蜜柚，更加直观地反映琯溪蜜柚特有的禀性。

琯溪蜜柚，是平和县的地方传统名果，以果大色美味佳，皮薄肉嫩汁多，甜酸爽口化渣，无籽耐贮质优而闻名海内外，素有“天然水果罐头”之美称,至今已有500多年的栽培历史。清朝乾隆年间被列为朝廷贡品，同治皇帝赠赐“西圃信记”印章一枚及青龙旗一面，作为贡品标识和禁令。

目前，全县面积已突破45万亩，年产46万吨，占全国四分之一，创造产值8亿多元,产品除畅销国内外市场，还在2003年冲破“绿色壁垒”，打入欧盟市场，实现福建省柑桔类产品进入欧盟市场零的突破,目前已打入欧盟、俄罗斯、英国、日本等海外市场，出口5万吨。
