湖南大学设计艺术学院，始创于1977年，是全国成立颇早的设计艺术学院之一。1993年在国内较早获得工业造型艺术（现设计学）硕士学位授予权，2005年获得设计艺术学（现设计学）博士学位授予权，2008年工业设计专业评为国家特色专业，2011年获得设计学一级学科博士授予权，2014年设立设计学博士后流动站。

学院现有工业设计、产品设计和视觉传达设计三个本科专业，设计学、工业设计工程硕士和艺术硕士（MFA）3个硕士点，1个设计学一级学科博士点。在校本科生600余人、硕士研究生200余人、博士研究生40余人。现有教师33人，包括教授9人、副教授8人，外籍教师8人，其中万人计划国家教学名师1人，万人计划中青年科技创新领军人才1人、国家外专千人计划教授1人。湖南大学与美国罗切斯特理工学院（RIT）合作举办的湖南大学-罗切斯特设计学院（深圳）是国内国际化办学的设计学院，目标规模为1500名学生，颁授中美双方学位。

设计艺术学院邀请了意大利、美国、日本、丹麦、韩国、阿根廷、英国、芬兰等国家及港台地区的一批大师级专家来湖南大学设计艺术学院进行学术交流，举办短期研讨班。围绕“社会创新设计”、“可持续发展设计”、“交互设计”等课题开展了合作研究及教学工作；与意大利米兰理工大学、日本千叶大学、美国辛辛那提大学、香港理工大学、台湾实践大学、芬兰阿尔托大学等建立了合作交流关系；与微软、英特尔、飞利浦、耐克、通用电器、索尼、三星、LG、西门子等跨国公司合作举办专题工作营或专题设计，并为学生提供国内外实习与交流的机会。

湖南大学设计艺术学院毕业生任教于清华大学、上海交通大学、中国美术学院、中央美术学院、浙江大学、重庆大学、华南理工大学、东南大学、天津大学、武汉大学、北京理工大学、中南大学等100余所大学，为我国设计教育的发展做出了重要贡献。另外毕业生就业于华为通讯、阿里巴巴、中兴通讯、腾讯、百度、联想、海尔、海信、TCL、长虹、康佳、科龙、美的、格力、一汽、二汽、奇瑞汽车、微软、通用汽车、UT斯达康、中国电子集团、LG等国内外大型企业，成为了各大企业的设计主管和设计骨干力量。

Hunan University Rochester Institute of design (Shenzhen), which is jointly organized by Hunan University and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), is a domestic international school of design, with a target scale of 1500 students and degrees awarded to both China and the United States.
