营口大米生产历史久远,早在清朝时期就因其籽粒饱满,洁白光亮,口味纯正成为贡米,而从上世纪60年代至起,营口大米在全国都有知名度,已进入北京人民大会堂等国家机关食堂。为了摆脱过去营口大米难以做大做强的局面,2006年1月10日营口市成立了米业协会,并以米业协会的名义向国家工商总局注册了“营口大米”商标。

营口有水田面积70多万亩,水稻广大种植区域在大石桥市。该种植区域地处大辽河下游冲积平原,这里土层深厚,土质盐碱,矿化度高。由于土壤呈微碱性和碱性,微量元素含量较为丰富,加之,这里温度适宜、光照充足、水资源充沛,已被认定为无公害种植区。这些都有为水稻种植和优质大米生产提供了得天独厚的条件。早在七八年前,大石桥市生产的“水源”牌、“太禾”牌等营口大米已进入北京人民大会堂等国家机关食堂,这说明独具品质的“营口大米”已得到了高层次消费人群的认可和青睐。
进入上世纪90年代末,营口米业的龙头企业开始认识到品牌的重要。当时水源、高坎、老边、新生农场等米业生产企业纷纷打出了“水源”、“太禾”、“禾香”等品牌,但由于品牌众多,形不成合力,营口大米难以做大做强。
营口大米的沉浮,引起了营口市委市政府的重视。早在2003年,当时的市委领导和主管副市长就对发展营口米业提出要求。2004年,营口市领导又责成有关部门,着手成立营口米业生产协会,打“营口大米”品牌。该市农业中心对营口米业加工企业进行了调查,并到各地参加米业展洽会,考察行情。
2006年1月10日市米业协会成立。之后,营口市以米业协会的名义向国家工商总局注册了“营口大米”商标。营口市米业协会目前共有47家会员单位,年初以来,共有营口金德田园米业有限公司、大石桥石佛粮库、大石桥旗口双林米业加工厂开始陆续生产“营口大米”。
